Regular vacuuming is a must between professional carpet cleaning and it is a task that needs to undertaken at least a few times a week.

What many people do not realize is that there is actually a right and wrong way to vacuum your carpets. Seriously, there really is more to vacuuming your carpets properly than simply pushing the vacuum backwards and forwards. Here are a few tips:

Vacuum Movement – When vacuuming any carpet use a back and forth slow and repetitive motion in an overlapping sequence. Even if you happen to own one of those very expensive super powered machines a single pass is usually not quite enough to trap all of the debris and dust. That does not mean that you have to exert to much force by going back over the same spot over and over again or you may damage the carpet fibers.

A happy medium is usually if you move to the right or left every couple of passes as you work your way across the room.

Dusting and Vacuuming – Dust before you vacuum. That may sound very obvious but you would be surprised by how often people do it backwards and waste all of their efforts by spreading dust all over their newly vacuumed carpets.

Keep an Eye on Crevices – Every room has corners and crevices and that is where dirt tends to accumulate without anyone paying too much notice. Very few vacuum cleaners can reach into those corners without you having to fetch out the attachment tools and although doing so can be a pain it really is worth the extra effort if you really want a properly vacuumed carpet.

Get the Timing Right – Unless the carpet is in a very high traffic area – the hallway for instance – it may not need vacuuming every day. Once every two days is probably just fine and in rooms that see far less use such as a formal dining room or a guest room once a week should be just fine.

Maintain Your Vacuum Cleaner the Right Way – When they are not in use keep all of the attachments and hoses that belong to your vacuum cleaner dust free and in a place where they are are stored together. In addition if you use a bagged vacuum change the bag when it is about 3/4 of the way full rather than waiting until it is so full that it it is spewing back dirt onto your newly vacuumed carpet.
